Costs and safeguards
Gold IRA scams and warning signs
Recognize pressure tactics, vague fee disclosures and unsupported return claims.
Recognize pressure and unverifiable promises
Be cautious about guaranteed appreciation, claims that gold is risk-free, urgent 'act today' deadlines, exaggerated tax benefits and attempts to discourage independent advice. A legitimate-looking website or testimonial does not establish the economics of a transaction.
Verify each counterparty
Confirm the dealer's legal identity and business details, then separately verify the custodian and depository. Check relevant regulator and consumer records directly rather than relying on screenshots or badges shown by the seller.
Protect the transfer process
Never send retirement funds to a personal account based solely on a phone instruction. Verify payment instructions using a separately obtained contact channel and confirm with the IRA custodian before authorizing a transaction.
Before you make a decision
- Which claims are supported by current written documents?
- What costs or restrictions apply if circumstances change?
- Who can independently confirm the tax and custody implications?
A practical example
An urgent phone call claiming a retirement account must be moved immediately is a reason to verify independently. End the call, locate the plan administrator’s contact details from an existing statement and confirm whether any action is required. Never use a callback number supplied solely by the caller. If a seller promises guaranteed returns or special tax treatment, request the exact contractual and legal basis and consult an independent professional.
