Gold IRA pros, cons and risks

Explore diversification arguments alongside volatility, spreads, storage costs and liquidity risks.

What exposure you are buying

Physical gold may diversify the types of assets held, but its price can fall and it does not pay interest or dividends. The outcome depends on purchase and sale prices after fees, not just the direction of a quoted spot price.

Costs that compound without compounding income

Recurring account and storage fees may continue even when metal prices are flat. A premium paid above spot and a dealer's lower repurchase bid can create an immediate hurdle before an investor breaks even.

Questions for portfolio fit

Consider how much of your retirement assets would become less liquid, how you would meet required withdrawals if applicable, and whether you need income from the investment. A qualified adviser can assess these questions against your full finances.

Before you make a decision

A practical example

A simple stress test begins with three scenarios: a falling metal price, an unchanged price and a rising price. In each case, deduct the documented entry premium, recurring charges and an illustrative exit spread. This makes it easier to see that a higher spot price does not necessarily produce a positive net result. Also ask how an unexpected cash need would be met and whether selling a portion of the holding is practical.
