Gold IRA basics
How does a gold IRA work?
Understand the roles of the account owner, custodian, metals dealer and storage provider.
From funding to storage
The usual sequence is opening an eligible self-directed account, arranging a permitted contribution or transfer, selecting eligible metal, authorizing a purchase, and confirming storage under the account's custody arrangement. Verify each step with the custodian before moving funds.
Keep ownership and possession distinct
An IRA owner may have an economic interest in the metal without being entitled to keep it at home. Personal possession can create serious tax consequences depending on the facts. Do not rely on a dealer's simplified 'home storage' claim.
Follow the paperwork
Retain account statements, purchase confirmations, metal descriptions, storage receipts and fee schedules. When selling, confirm whether proceeds remain inside the IRA or are distributed to you; that distinction can change the tax outcome.
Before you make a decision
- Which claims are supported by current written documents?
- What costs or restrictions apply if circumstances change?
- Who can independently confirm the tax and custody implications?
A practical example
Consider the difference between a purchase instruction and a completed purchase. Funding the account does not itself mean that metal has been acquired. After funds arrive, the account owner may need to approve a specific product and quote. The custodian’s statement should then reflect the investment, and storage documentation should match the purchase. A mismatch in metal quantity, product description or fees should be resolved before assuming the transaction is complete.
