Transfers and setup
401(k) to gold IRA rollover
Check plan eligibility, rollover mechanics and tax consequences with your administrator.
Check whether money can leave the plan
An employer plan may restrict distributions while you are employed. Eligibility depends on the plan document, your circumstances and applicable law; an advertisement cannot establish your eligibility.
Understand direct and indirect rollovers
A direct rollover generally sends eligible funds between plan and receiving arrangement. An indirect rollover may involve withholding and a deadline; mishandling it can create taxes or penalties. Confirm current rules with the plan administrator and a tax professional.
Avoid making the dealer your plan adviser
The dealer can describe its products but should not be your sole source for tax treatment, plan eligibility or investment allocation. Request written instructions from the receiving custodian before authorizing the transfer.
Before you make a decision
- Which claims are supported by current written documents?
- What costs or restrictions apply if circumstances change?
- Who can independently confirm the tax and custody implications?
A practical example
A current employee may not be eligible to move funds from an active employer plan merely because a dealer offers a rollover service. Start with the plan’s written distribution rules. If a rollover is permitted, obtain instructions from the plan administrator and receiving custodian. Verify where the payment goes and how the transaction is reported. Do not infer that a transfer is tax-free solely because a salesperson calls it a rollover.
