Transfers and setup
How to open a gold IRA
Map the account-opening process and documents to review before funding.
Start with the account agreement
Ask whether the proposed custodian permits the specific metal and storage arrangement. Read the account's fee schedule and prohibited-transaction guidance before submitting an application.
Fund using the correct route
A new contribution, trustee-to-trustee transfer and rollover are not the same. Their limits, deadlines and reporting can differ. Ask the sending and receiving administrators to document the route before money moves.
Confirm completion, not just initiation
After purchase, reconcile the funding amount, dealer invoice, metal quantity, custodian statement and storage confirmation. Keep copies of all documents and note the process for later sale or distribution.
Before you make a decision
- Which claims are supported by current written documents?
- What costs or restrictions apply if circumstances change?
- Who can independently confirm the tax and custody implications?
A practical example
Opening an account and buying metal are separate milestones. A custodian may approve the account but reject a particular product, and a dealer quote may change before funds settle. Ask how long each stage normally takes and which party sends confirmation. Keep the funding receipt, purchase invoice and storage statement together. If an expected document is missing, contact the responsible organization directly.
