Gold IRA basics
Gold IRA vs gold ETF
Compare physical-metal custody with fund ownership, liquidity and recurring expenses.
Physical ownership versus a security
A physical-metals IRA owns qualifying metal through its custody arrangement. A gold ETF is a security whose exposure and redemption rights depend on its prospectus; ordinary shareholders generally cannot assume they can redeem shares for individual coins.
Different cost structures
Physical ownership may entail purchase premiums, storage, administration and selling spreads. ETFs may have ongoing fund expenses and brokerage trading spreads. Compare the full cost over your expected holding period, not a single headline percentage.
Different practical exits
ETF shares may trade during market hours, subject to market conditions; physical metal sales depend on a buyer, quote and settlement process. Review the ETF prospectus and the physical account agreements rather than assuming either has guaranteed liquidity.
Before you make a decision
- Which claims are supported by current written documents?
- What costs or restrictions apply if circumstances change?
- Who can independently confirm the tax and custody implications?
A practical example
Imagine you need to raise cash quickly. Selling an ETF share may be possible through a brokerage during market hours, but the execution price can differ from the last quoted value. Selling physical bullion requires a buyer, a quote and settlement, possibly including shipment. Neither path guarantees a particular price. Compare how you would obtain proceeds, what rights you own and which fees apply before treating the two forms of exposure as equivalent.
